Which Visual Basic?

By: rekha singh | 10 May 2010 12:42 pm

Hello,

Please advise me. Which Visual Basic should one learn.

I use PHP for websites and know a bit about javascripting.

One hears of so many versions:

- Visual Basic 6
- Visual Studio Express (Visual Basic)  (various versions ...)
- VB.net
- VBA
- VB.geeks

Which one is most suitable for Windows Programming? And, which one is the easiest to start with?

Thank you

You are kind of mixing Apples and Oranges.

You want to get started with Visual Studio Express (2010 version now out and requires .NET 4).

Visual basic 6 is very old and was structured more like a cross between modern object oriented programming and Qbasic. It didn't require near as much structure as today's language. It still works for 95% of anything you
need to do, but it's not free and hard to find. If you are learning, you might as well learn the modern way (although there are 10 times the number of examples VB6 because hacks have had years to flood the market place -
don't let that throw you.).

VBA is Visual basic for Applications. It isn't a stand-alone development system. It is incorporated into Microsoft Office Products. You can use Visual basic like commands and structure within an application. It is very limited and leveraged by the flexibility of the application.

.NET programming is part of Visual Studio. Think of it as a specialized set of extensions for handling network/internet centric applications. VB.geek isn't really a development system at all.
